Information for prospective students

The European Commission has awarded to The Cyprus Institute the ERASUS STANDARD UNIVERSITY CHARTER

The Cyprus Institute offers the following Doctoral Programs:

  1. Computational Sciences - Code CoS
  2. Digital Cultural Heritage - Code DCH
  3. Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences - Code EAS

Language of instruction: English

Evaluation and selection process

The Admissions Committee of the Cyprus Institute evaluates applications based on applicants’ merit and potential for graduate work, as well as criteria that include the applicant’s grades, recommendation letters and how their research interests match the work and expertise of the CyI faculty members.

Selected candidates may be asked for an interview in Cyprus or via teleconferencing. Following the interview, a written notification of the outcome of applications will be sent to applicants. Those successful will be invited to proceed with the formalities of their registration.

Documents you have to submit if you are a prospective student:

1. Application form

2. Statement of Intent or, Statement of Purpose

A statement that describes your current academic work and future professional plans in relation to the Cyprus Institute research center you are applying to. Point to the educational, research and personal experiences that shaped your interest in your proposed field of study. Outline the research area that you are interested in and the research topics that you intend to investigate while in residence at the CyI. Be sure to concisely mention examples of your work that explain your academic maturity and potential to meet the expectations of the intense graduate program of study at the Cyprus Institute. Briefly explain how the work would be innovative and useful to other researchers in the field. Your Statement should not exceed 1500 words and needs to be written in English.

3. Letters of Recommendation

Three academic letters of recommendation addressed to the Cyprus Institute Admissions Committee. Letters should be written by faculty members or, other professionals who are well acquainted with the applicant’s academic, research and professional work. Recommendations should describe the applicant’s academic and research abilities and his/her potential for graduate study at the Cyprus Institute. The indication of specific examples of academic merit, professional achievements or, any other information that reflects the applicant’s promise to successfully pursue graduate work, would be particularly welcome by CyI Admissions Committee.

4. Academic Degrees and Transcripts

Official copy of your Master’s degree and official transcript(s) of your past academic work and studies. The transcript(s) should include a detailed list of the courses/seminars you have taken along with the grades you have received in each one of them and a GPA.

The Institute accepts Master’s degrees obtained from a recognized accredited institution with a GPA at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent. If you have not completed a Master’s degree yet, provide a transcript(s) that list your coursework and grades thus far, and expected date of completion of the Master’s degree.

5. English Language Certificate (if English is not your first language) or, equivalent

An English Language Certificate if your first language is not English. The Institute accepts IELTS (at least 6.5) or TOEFL (at least 570 paper-based or 220 computer-based) and TWE certificates. If you have finished your last degree less than 2 years ago in English speaking country or in institution where the instruction language was English, there is no need to submit an English certificate.

6. Internationally accepted Standardized test

Test scores of GRE general and subject tests should be included in the application form. When taking the tests, please use the CyI institutional GRE DI: 6774
