Research Assistantships

The Cyprus Institute offers Research Assistantships, subject to availability of funds, to all admitted Doctoral students based on the correspondence between the research projects of the Institute and faculty, and the interests and abilities of the students.

Research Assistantships are offered for the nine-month academic year, a three-month summer appointment, or for 12 months. They are renewable based on the students’ performance and achievement in their research project and studies, and the available funding opportunities of the research groups.

Research Assistants will receive a grant to cover all tuition fees in addition to a currently effective stipend of €1,250 per month and, if applicable, a return air ticket (economy class), to their country of origin. Research Assistants will be provided with the same Health Insurance Benefits that cover other CyI employees at no extra cost.

If Research Assistants have secured a fellowship/scholarship/grant or other award from external sources that exceeds €5,000 tenable for the same period of their assistantship, the assistantship compensation and workload will be reduced accordingly. External funds less than the above amount will have no effect on the Research Assistantship.

A Research Assistant is a member of a research group in one of the Institute’s centers, working under a Research Supervisor. The position offers a close association with other members of the faculty and is a very effective arrangement for doctoral study and professional training. Work on the student’s thesis project is normally part of the Research Assistant’s assignment, with opportunities to participate in other research projects that could influence the choice of dissertation topic. The assigned research duties and doctoral study requirements demand full-time attention and for this reason students are not allowed to accept additional employment. In exceptional cases where additional employment is warranted, the Research Assistant must obtain the approval of the supervisor and the dissertation committee.

Research Assistants appointed for a twelve-month period will not have the regular academic vacation period but will be entitled to two weeks of vacation with pay in addition to the official public holidays that the Institute observes. Vacations must be arranged with the Assistant’s Research Supervisor and should be taken prior to the termination of the assistantship tenancy.

Prospective students should include an application for Research Assistantship with their application for submission into a doctoral program of study addressed to:
